Point scale for wines / price breakdown
@: "In Defense of Wine World's 150 point scale. Recent criticism of Wine World magazine's breakthrough 150 point scale has prompted a defensive stance from advocates at Vintage Wines Ltd. The reason that Wine World is 'raisin' the roof' on the out-of-date 100 point scale used to critique wine can be found in the price-to-point quotient, or as we lovingly dub it: The PPQ. A prime example of the inequity that this simple formula uncovers can be found in the following wines: 2002 Las Rocas and 2000 Ch. Haut Brion. From Robert Parker the Las Rocas received 91 points at $5.99 and the Haut Brion received 98 points at $379.99. Plugging these numbers into our trusty formula we see that $5.99/91= $0.06 per point for the Las Rocas and $379.99/98= $3.88 per point for the Haut Brion. Now let's say that in our 150 point scale the Haut Brion merited 139 points. This would produce a PPQ of $2.73 per point, thus reducing the differential between the Las Rocas and Haut Brion! In the future, Wine World magazine reserves the right to 'raise the roof' additionally in proportion to continually rising prices."
